South Wind, Clear Sky (Red Fuji)

凱風快晴(赤富士)(冨嶽三十六景)

  • Distant View
  • Mountain
Mount Fuji slopes glowing copper-red in clear morning light after a south wind — South Wind, Clear Sky (Red Fuji). The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).
Katsushika Hokusai. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).

Known as Red Fuji, this view catches the mountain in rare morning light. A distant viewpoint lets the entire silhouette become pure color.

The distant viewpoint keeps Fuji whole — study how scale reads without foreground distraction.

Mountain form dominates; notice the minimal bokashi gradation that builds the red glow.

Pair with Rainstorm Beneath the Summit to see Hokusai’s two-weather Fuji in one series.

Extended Japanese viewing notes: 凱風快晴(赤富士)(冨嶽三十六景).
